Frequently asked questions
How many Electrical contractors are licensed in California?
This directory lists 29,006 Electrical contractors in California, of which 27,956 currently hold an active CSLB license.
Should a Electrical contractor carry a bond and workers' compensation?
Most active CSLB licensees carry a contractor bond, and any contractor with employees must carry workers' compensation. Each profile shows what the CSLB record reports.
How do I check if an electrician is licensed in California?
Check two databases. The company you hire must hold an active CSLB C-10 Electrical contractor license, which you can verify on this page or on the CSLB website. The individual doing the work is certified separately by the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) Electrician Certification Unit. A reputable electrical contractor can show both: an active C-10 license for the business and certification cards for its electricians.
Do electricians have to be licensed in California?
Yes, for any electrical job where labor, materials, and all other items total $1,000 or more, the contracting business must hold an active CSLB C-10 license. Since January 1, 2025 (AB 2622), smaller jobs may be done without a license only when the work is minor and standalone, no building permit is required, and no one is employed on the job. Individual employee electricians are not licensed by the CSLB; the company's qualifier holds the license and the DIR certifies the workers.
Is there a California journeyman electrician license lookup?
No. California does not issue journeyman electrician licenses. Contracting businesses hold the CSLB C-10 license, and individual electricians are certified by the DIR. To verify a business, search its C-10 license here; to verify an individual's certification, use the DIR's electrician certification search.
Can a C-10 electrician install solar panels and battery storage?
Yes. A C-10 electrical contractor may install solar photovoltaic systems and battery energy storage systems with no size cap. A C-46 solar contractor currently may install batteries only as part of a solar system it installs; a standalone battery retrofit needs a C-10 contractor, or a general engineering (A) or general building (B) contractor working within its scope.
